Mount Aso is a volcano located in the Aso region of Kumamoto Prefecture in central Kyushu, Japan. It is a large composite volcano with one of the largest calderas in the world and is an active volcano.
The highest point is Takadake (1592 m above sea level), and the caldera extends 25 km from north to south and 18 km from east to west.
In 2007, Aso was selected as one of the 100 best geological sites in Japan, and in October 2009, the area inside and outside the caldera was recognized as the Aso Geopark, a Japan Geopark and World Geopark where visitors can experience the history of the giant eruption and the living crater.
